History Genre

Continuing my research with the genre History. History magazines are mainly read by enthusiasts who enjoy learning about the past, famous events, and important figures. Some of the most popular of are the History Today and BBC History magazines.

One of the most successful publishers is Immediate Media, similar to Conde Nast they both use the internet to their advantage. Publishing all their magazines online, as well always making sure that the magazines have a strong brand identity so that the reader knows what the magazines is. Immediate Media publishers some of the most reputable magazines like the BBC

History magazines are differ much from fashion magazines, with two completely different audiences. History magazines are meant to educate the reader about historical events, and important people, fashion magazines also educate but they educate about newest clothes and tips. History magazines are something a person could go back to and could be relevant many years later, but fashion magazines are the opposite. Since they are based on trends and new clothes coming out they often need to release new magazines to keep up with the current trends.

Genre Research Fashion

I've continued my magazine genre researching but this time with fashion magazines, fashion magazines are one of the most popular genres of magazines. In this genre of magazines they are separate subgenres within it that cater to different audiences. Young adults and teens tend to prefer magazines like Teen Vogue, and Seventeen. Focusing on the lasted trends, what celebrity are wearing and beauty tips. While fashion enthusiasts would lean more to magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle. Which focus more on high fashion, new collections, and runways.

Condé Nast is considered the best at publishing fashion magazines, publishing Vogue which is considered the best of the best. Condé Nast remains successful at this level by using internet to promote their magazines. Being one of the first to switch from print only to publishing online. As well as using popular social media platforms to promote contents of the magazine.

Fashion magazines differ from others genres focusing more on guides, interviews, and trends. Fashion magazines focus mainly on high quality photographs as it prefers a more visual heavy layouts.

Exploring Romance

I've continued my research of genres, this time focusing on the genre romance. Romance magazines often use soft colors and elegant fonts to sow a heartfelt tone. Popular design for imagery often includes couples or abstract representation of love.

Colors is major part in covers for romance magazines.. Pink, lavender and cream are commonly found. These aim to focus on feelings and connect through the audience, prioritizing emotion.

After researching romantic magazines I decided for my project that I would most likely not use the genre romance for my project but instead doing mystery.

Exploring Mystery

Hi! I've recently continued my research analyzing the genre of mystery magazines. I started researching color theory and how they give off that feeling of suspense by using colors like black, dark blue and gray. These books often use combinations of colors like black and red to communicate violence and mystery.

Covers of these mystery magazines would often not include a major part on the cover, only including half of the picture like keeping half of a characters face missing. This is done to try to create mystery and hook the reader to read and find the missing piece by reading through it.

The research that I've done so far has helped me change the direction of my project as before researching I thought that I would lean to more horror but after the research I started to prefer to mystery.

Horror Book Cover

Finally finished my book cover! I took this photo of a long hallway, and I immediately thought that this is the one for my book cover. The ominous feeling that the long hallway was giving was perfect.

I researched how horror genre book covers need to convey horror, and I found that the almost all of the book covers have the color red. Which I found out is because red is linked with blood, fear and mystery.  Many of these books that I have seen have these weird and unusual fonts which I decided that I would use this in my book cover.
Editing my photo into to the perfect cover for the horror genre was easier said than done since it was my first time ever using InDesign. All my plans were put to a halt, I couldn't figure this new program. Thankfully I finally got it, thanks to tutorials on Youtube
I first changed the color of the photo into a red gradient following conventions of the horror genre. I changed the font and the color of the title to add mystery, as well as added a subtitle to also add mysterious. In end, this what came up and I am proud on how it came out.
